10. Don’t Breathe (2016)
A home invasion thriller with a twist. Well made and highly entertaining, Don’t Breathe solidified Fede Alvarez‘s spot in the genre.
09. Hereditary (2018)
A surprise hit of 2018, Hereditary is not only shot tremendously well and superbly acted, but offers tension and scares that will haunt even the most seasoned horror lovers.
08. You’re Next (2011)
Not for the faint of heart, You’re Next pits a family against a group of attackers. Nothing groundbreaking, here, but this movie does an excellent job at everything.
07. Insidious (2010)
06. Let Me In (2010)
One of the best remakes of all time, Let Me In takes the story of the Swedish classic, Let The Right One In and Americanizes it in the best way possible. Chloe Grace-Moretz and Kodi Smit-McPhee show amazing chops and perfect chemistry in this “vampiric” love tale.
05. The Conjuring (2013)
James Wan is the best horror filmmaker of this generation and it is not even close.
04. Green Room (2016)
03. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
Another film that some will say is not a “true horror” movie, but certainly does fit the bill. 10 Cloverfield Lane brought in audiences with its title, but 15 minutes in has already stepped out from its predecessor’s shadow. The final scene is one of some controversy, but adds a layer of depth to the movie that most in this genre do not have.
02. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Drew Goddard teamed up with Joss Whedon to write this wild script that flips the entire genre on its head. The Cabin in the Woods will make you laugh, but will also make you think. These are traits not normally found in horror films that are meant to be taken seriously.
01. Black Swan (2010)
Darren Aronofsky crafted a masterpiece with Black Swan. The direction is brilliant, the acting is elite and the score is magnificent. The psychological breakdown of the main character has never been done better. Natalie Portman provides one of her most outstanding performances to date.
