Now that Aquaman is ruling the box office world, I decided that I would have to go back and finally see this. I have no idea if this is required viewing to understand the new movie, but I’m all for giving DC another chance. I loathed Batman vs Superman but thoroughly enjoyed Wonder Woman, so I hoped things were trending in a good direction. I’m happy to say that I enjoyed this more than a lot of people seem to have, but it isn’t without its flaws. I will not compare DC to Marvel as is the norm, but I will say that some of the complaints regarding the DCECU as compared to the MCU were addressed here, though they may have taken that course correction a bit far at times. Fans demanded more levity and vibrant color tones and those qualities were most certainly present here. While it occasionally felt like they tried a bit too hard, I’m certainly not going to complain that they listened to fans concerns and gave them what they asked for. My major issues with the film were two-fold. For one, some of the CGI was just awful. Maybe it’s just me, but Cyborg looked incredibly awkward any time his face was visible, and a lot of the final fight scene was came off a bit silly. Secondly, I wish more effort had been put into characterization. It feels like an unfair critique since the script did try to give service to the new characters, but it felt rushed and the story would have been better served with more solidified backstories and relationships before the band got together to kick some ass. Having said that, the movie is undeniably fun, and a lot of that has to do with newcomers The Flash and Aquaman, who steal a lot of scenery along the way. I wouldn’t mind seeing Snyder hand the reins over to someone else for a while to see what another capable director can do with the series as a fresh vision might held further their steps in the right direction. Overall this is a solid film that could have done some things better but is a clear step up and doesn’t overstay its welcome.
