Film of the Day (09/14/18): Ed Wood

Written By Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski
Directed By Tim Burton

I know nothing about the man this was based around, but from what I can gather, Burton was the perfect choice to make something like this. Wood’s films were apparently off the wall, so who better to show you a bit of that world while putting his own (subtle) touch on the craziness than Burton? I’m a sucker for movies about making movies as it is, but when they are this much fun it’s even better. It is not only an ode to (bad) movies, but also a humorous examination of vision and determination despite the odds stacked against you. The stuff between Wood (Johnny Depp) and Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau) is a great touch, as Wood befriended an aging star for his own reasons but quickly came to care deeply for his friend, often coming to his aid when he struggled with addiction. There are some dark tones to this, as funny as it is, and they don’t just come from being about shooting horror movies. But it’s all balanced very well with the humor and has a great throwback vibe throughout, from the acting to the editing and everything in between. I’m glad I finally got around to this one!
