The nice thing about not being a massive fanboy of major franchises like this is going into the theater without the weight of expectations on your shoulders. I wanted a fun, popcorn blockbuster in space and that’s exactly what I got. Bonus points for some references and Easter eggs easy enough for someone like me, who has seen every Star Wars film once (a bit more with the originals but still), to catch on to and enjoy. Is the film flawed? Sure. For one, I think it could trim about 15 minutes and be just as effective. Is it predictable at times? Of course. But honestly, if you trust everyone on a ship full of smugglers and criminals, you’re not as smart as Chewie is old. I enjoyed this for what it was, and while it isn’t something that’s going to stick with me for the long haul, I do think it is getting the shaft from the tryhard population of fanboys who want to despise anything that is made differently from what they would have done. Veteran director Ron Howard, together with a very solid cast, has put his stamp on this classic series, and has done a fine job. I may not like it as much as some of the other recent entrants, but it’s good to see a movie having fun being fun.
