Film of the Day (04/17/18): Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange
Written By Jon Spaihts, C. Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson
Directed by Scott Derrickson

Color me pleasantly surprised! Having zero knowledge of this character, I didn’t bother seeing it in the theater because I assumed I wouldn’t be that engaged. Fast forward a couple years and I’m cramming to prepare for Infinity War and I realize how wrong I was.

As an origin story, this is pretty solid stuff. You spend a bit of time (but not too long) getting a sense of who the main characters are and getting a sense of their motivations before moving into the meat of the story. Yes, it features yet another save the world story, but does so in an incentive way that feels fresh in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. By the end, you’re excited to see what else this new character can contribute to that larger universe as a whole.

But before said story begins, we open with a sweet fight scene with some unreal visual tricks! I admit, part of why I didn’t see this in the theater was because it looked like a one-trick pony. And maybe, years from now, all I will remember are those incredible visuals, but I still think that sells the story a bit short. It was very cool to see a new side of the MCU (sorcery), and I’m looking forward to seeing Strange mix it up with Thanos (since, after all, he controls one of the infinity stones).

No complaints here, this is a fun watch with a solid script and a good cast (seriously, you can never go wrong with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton and Mads Mikkelsen). Cumberbatch does a fine job as the titular character that I suspect will fall victim to Thanos by next weekend.

Currently available on Netflix.
